Communicating Sustainable Practices in the Creative and Cultural Industries

City Varieties Music Hall, Swan St, Leeds LS1 6LW

We’re pleased to invite you to an event with two distinct strands, each dedicated to addressing the challenge of communicating sustainability and climate change effectively within the creative and cultural industries.

The creative and cultural industries are uniquely placed to communicate the climate crisis and inspire action in their audiences, yet often we lack the right language, don’t use the right format, or are so scared of doing or saying the wrong thing we say nothing at all. This event aims to help everyone within the creative and cultural industries communicate the climate crisis more succinctly, as well as communicate their own actions for the climate more effectively to our collective audience.

The first strand centres on using art to effectively communicate the complexities of climate change. Given the global urgency of this issue, it’s vital to explore innovative and compelling ways to depict it through the powerful medium of art.

The second strand aligns more closely with research conducted by Indigo (Act Green), which indicated that cultural audiences are concerned about climate change, yet they often lack clarity on cultural organisations’ sustainability efforts. Therefore, this strand is focused on refining the ways we broadcast sustainability actions and environmental commitments to our audiences. We aim to foster an understanding and connection between audiences and organisations, reducing ambiguity and avoiding greenwashing.

Following these strands, we have scheduled a networking session, complemented by a lunch. This will provide an opportunity to discuss insights from the event, share ideas, and build connections with other attendees, including experts and industry leaders.

There will also be an opportunity to experience our VR headset experience “Home Planet”, a proof of concept immersive reality experience that attempts to show a more impactful version of our Carbon Literacy training course.

Through these discussions, our goal is to shed light on the role that the creative and cultural sectors can play in advancing societal shifts towards sustainability and a net-zero future.
This event is part of Yorkshire Sustainability Week, in partnership with LEEDS 2023 Year of Culture and with kind support from Leeds Heritage Theatres.
